Learning Philosophy at Heroes Academy

Self-paced challenges, goal setting techniques, and measures of accountability equip children to be independent lifelong learners.

Hands-on Quests for Science, Entrepreneurship and the Arts prepare children for Apprenticeships and real world challenges.

The Hero’s Journey, self-governance, and relational contracts and consequences form the virtuous habits that develop strong character.

Key Differences

  • We have Guides not Teachers.
  • We have Studios not Classrooms.
  • We have Portfolios and Exhibitions not Grades.
  • We have Contracts and Covenants not Rules.
  • We ask Questions not lecture.
  • We are Self-Paced not Teacher-Paced (No Homework).
  • Our students find their own Apprenticeships.

Key Questions

  • Do you want your child to feel like life is an endless stream of opportunities?
  • Do you want your child searching for the truth but not at the cost of religious indoctrination?
  • Do you want your child to learn from real world challenges?

Achieving Mastery

At Heroes, we believe proof of work is far more important than arbitrary testing. Badges, portfolios, and exhibitions display proof of skill, ensure mastery over learning, and equip young heroes with real world skills to help them in their Hero's Journey.

  • 1

Students and parents use badges to track the development of knowledge and skills in various areas like: Reading, Writing, Math, Spelling, Leadership, and Character Development.

  • 2

Electronic and hard copy Portfolios demonstrate skills and talents in various forms and serve as evidence of skills and creativity.

  • 3

Public exhibitions at the end of most Quests allow young heroes to present work to experts, customers or the public for a real world test.

21st Century Learning

  • The latest in educational technology for self paced mastery of reading, writing and math skills.
  • Deep Socratic discussions about heroes, history and self governance to hone critical thinking skills, learn to make difficult decisions, and build confidence and character.
  • Hands-on project based Quests to master the tools and skills needed to solve problems in the real world.
  • Written promises and covenants that form a tightly bound community of individuals learning to form authentic friendships and honestly resolve interpersonal problems.

Game-Based Learning Tools

At Heroes, we believe that:

Clear thinking leads to good decisions,
Good decisions lead to the right habits,
The right habits lead to character and
Character becomes destiny.

The American "Experiment"

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

We believe in liberty, justice, and the ideals of the American revolution as the cornerstones of civilization. In addition to experiential learning, we will study the American documents and the true meaning behind them, as we examine other cultures and forms of government.
